[1막]

1장 (용궁)

갑작스레 신음을 토하며 병에 걸린 남해 수궁 광리왕은 괴이한 자신의 병에 한탄한다.

이를 들은 선의도사가 하늘에서 내려와 용왕의 맥을 짚고, 천년 묵은 토끼의 간이 그 특효약이라 이르고 홀연히 사라진다. 용왕은 만조백관을 불러 누가 지상에 올라가 토끼의 간을 구해올지 논 의한다. 대신들 모두가 외면하던 중, 별주부 자라가 자청해 토끼의 간을 구해오겠다고 나선다. 용왕은 별주부의 충성심을 높이 사고, 시급히 토끼의 간을 구해오라 명한다.

Act Ⅰ

SceneⅠ(the Underwater Palace)

The Dragon King of the underwater palace in the south sea suddenly fell ill. He tried every means available with no result. When he sighed over his sickness, a spiritual guide came down from the heaven and told him that a hare``s liver would be good for it and disappeared. The king called all the cabinet members and discussed who would go up to the land and get a hare``s liver. Only the tortoise volunteered to go and get a hare``s liver for the king. The Dragon King was moved by the tortoise``s faithfulness and ordered him to hurry to bring a hare``s liver.

2장 (별주부의 집)

별주부 자라는 나라님의 약을 구해 큰 벼슬을 얻어 올 것이라고 그의 모친에게 약조하고, 이별을 슬퍼하는 그의 처와 자식에게 작별인사를 나눈다.

SceneⅡ (the Tortoise``s House)

The tortoise told his mother that he should go and get the medicine for the king``s sickness and he would obtain a high government position. He left home saying goodbye to his wife and kids who were sad at their parting.

3장 (산중)

별주부는 수중을 헤엄치고 멀고 먼 길을 기어서 지상에 당도한 후, 토끼를 찾아 산중을 헤맨다. 한편, 산중에서는 동물들이 모여 상전(윗전)을 뽑는 회의를 한다. 회의 중 호랑이가 나타나 때마침 그곳을 지나가던 별주부를 잡아먹으려 하지만, 자라는 패술을 부려 호랑이를 물리친다. 우여곡절 끝에 토끼를 만난 별주부는 꾀를 내어 달래고, 용궁의 훈련대장을 시켜준다며 꼬드겨 함께 수궁으로 향한다.

Scene Ⅲ (in the Mountains)

The tortoise arrived at land after swimming a long way and combed the mountains for a hare. In the mountains, the animals were holding a meeting to elect the chief. The tortoise who were passing by met a tiger and made a narrow escape. He found a hare after much meandering. He lured the hare telling him that he would be the police chief and took him to the palace.

4장 (용궁가는 바닷가)

물을 무서워하는 토끼를 달래고 잡아채서 별주부는 용궁으로 향한다.

SceneⅣ (Beach to the Palace)

The tortoise lured the hare who was afraid of the water and took him to the palace.

5장 (용궁)

용궁에 도착한 토끼와 별주부. 토끼는 용궁의 화려한 경관에 감탄을 하나, 용왕이 토끼를 잡아 들이라는 명령에 놀라 토끼는 온갖 짐승들의 이름을 둘러댄다.

Act Ⅱ

Scene Ⅴ(the Underwater Palace)

The hare arrived at the palace and he was charmed with the beautiful scenery. Sniffing out the danger, he was shocked and called the names of all kinds of animals, pretending as if he were not a hare.

6장 (용궁 어전)

나졸들에게 붙잡힌 토끼는 배가 갈라질 위기에 처하지만, 자신의 배에 간이 없다는 꾀를 낸다. 즉, 지상에 두고 왔다는 핑계로 위기를 모면한다. 토끼의 여러 논리에 속은 용왕은 오히려 별주부를 나무라고 토끼를 위한 잔치를 베푼다. 그리고 다시 토끼에게 지상으로 올라가 간을 가져올 것을 부탁한다.

SceneⅥ (Before the King at the Palace)

The hare was caught by the soldiers and he was at a crises that his stomach was to open. He cudgelled his brains and asked the king to send him back to the land for the liver, saying that he left his liver in the mountain. The king who was fooled by the hare scolded the tortoise and had a party for the hare asking him to go back to the land and bring his liver back.

7장 (바닷가)

별주부는 토끼를 등에 업고 헤엄쳐 산중으로 향한다.

SceneⅦ (Beach)

The tortoise swam carrying the hare on his back and made toward the mountains.

8장 (산중)

다시 돌아온 산중.

산중에 도착한 토끼는 별주부를 두고 도망가려다 간을 달라는 별주부에게 화를 내며 칡넝쿨로 홀롱개를 만들어 자라 목을 매 혼 내준다. 별주부는 모든 것을 포기하고 자탄하며 다시 용궁 으로 돌아간다.

Scene Ⅷ (in the Mountains)

They came back to the mountains. Coming back to the mountains, the hare was going to run away. Being angry at the tortoise who asked for his liver, the hare scared him tying his neck with arrowroot vines. The tortoise gave up everything and went back to the palace grieving to himself.

9장 (산중-초동 場)

의기양양해진 토끼는 껑충껑충 뛰어다니다 초동들이 걸어둔 그물에 걸려 죽을 신세가 되지만 꾀를 내어 초동들을 속이며 위기를 모면한다. 죽을 고비를 넘긴 토끼는 이번엔 독수리에게 낚아 채여 죽임을 당할 위기에 처한다. 그러나 토끼는 다시 한번 꾀를 내어 독수리를 속여 위기를 모면한다. 토끼의 꾀에 넘어간 독수리는 분통을 터트리며 날아간다.

Scene Ⅸ (in the Mountains - Young Woodsmen)

The hare who was leaping and running in high spirits was caught in a trap set by the young woodsmen. He, however, had a narrow escape deceiving them with a trick. Now he was caught by an eagle and he was at a crisis again. He cudgelled his brains again and passed through the critical situation. The deceived eagle got furious at the hare and flew away.

10장 (대단원)

토끼는 마지막으로 모두에게 헛된 욕심을 쫒지 말라는 충고와 함께 막이 내린다.

Scene Ⅹ (the End)

The curtain goes down with the hare``s advice that we should not seek after any vain greed.
